Health inequalities and the social determinants of health tobacco and health structural drivers of health inequities including historical and institutional discrimination role of commercial actors in non-communicable disease epidemics

Research interests

Sarah's research interests include health inequalities and the social determinants of health; the impacts on health and health policy of tobacco and other unhealthy commodity producers; and global health.  She is particularly interested in the structural drivers of health inequities including historical and institutional discrimination and the role of commercial actors in non-communicable disease epidemics.

Teaching and Supervision

Sarah is currently on research leave. She normally leads the specialist semester 2 course in Social Determinants of Health and Public Policy (which is convened by Dr Kat Smith in 2018) and is programme organiser for the intercalated Bachelor of Medical Sciences with Honours in Global Health Policy (for which Dr Kat Smith and Dr Sudeepa Abeysinghe are acting programme organisers in 2018).

Previous experience

Sarah joined the University of Edinburgh in 2009 having previously worked in public health, medicine and research in New Zealand, the USA, New Zealand, West Africa and Glasgow.
