Citizenship, young people and political engagement: How young people make sense of their role as citizens in Scotland and the Netherlands
My research is focused on the relationship between citizens and their political community. I am particularly interested in questions of political participation, political belonging and legitimacy.
For my dissertation I investigate young people's participation in democratic processes and conceptions of citizenship. In light of an ongoing debate about an allegedly politically apathetic youth, 'citizenship' has become a catchphrase that scholars and practitioners employ to avoid a looming crisis of political legitimacy. It is often defined as a practice, based on things that adults do. It remains unclear how young people understand citizenship and how they make sense of their role as citizens. In an effort to contribute to the debate on the puzzle of youth participation, I explore how young people ascribe meaning to the role of the citizen and how they decide whether and how to get involved in their political communities.
I have a particular interest in innovative research methodology and applications of quantitative methods. I am an active member of the quantitative methods group of the School of Social and Political Science.

The view from the continent - What people in other member states think about the UK’s EU referendum:
ESRC-funded project with Jan Eichhorn and Daniel Kenealy to investigate attitudes in six EU countries towards the UK's EU membership referendum through a comparative social survey. The project was hosted by AQMeN and is part of the ESRC "UK in a Changing Europe" programme.
Young persons' attitudes on Scottish Independence - A survey analysis of 14-17 year olds:
ESRC-funded project with Jan Eichhorn, Lindsay Paterson, John MacInnes and Michael Rosie to conduct surveys investigating the political attitudes of first time voters in the context of a lowered voting age to 16 in the referendum on Scottish independence in September 2014.
