MSc. in Sexual & Reproductive health research, LSHTM, UK
MA Sociology, India
I joined GPHU in 2010 after completing my PhD thesis examining the implications of the discourse and practice of global public private partnerships in health, such as the Global Fund, for health systems and HIV management in India.
I have an interdisciplinary background in sociology and public health with a specialisation in sexual and reproductive health and health policy research. I work at the intersections of health politics, social justice and development praxis, and over the years have worked with various development actors and social movements in India in varying capacity: feminist researcher, trainer and policy advocate with interest in gendered and equitable health policy & systems.
Research
Through Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), I am currently involved with a DFID/ESRC Joint Programme of research, entitled "Biomedical and Health Experimentation in South Asia: Critical Perspectives on Collaboration, Governance and Competition". This multi country social science research is led by Prof Roger Jeffery and involves colleagues in Edinburgh, Durham and also in Mumbai, Kathmandu and Colombo.
My wide ranging research interests can be clubbed under the following categories:
1) Health policy and governance : understanding and critically evaluating the role of commercial and other actors in policy responses to global health issues; examining the equity and health systems implications of global health initiatives/ global health partnerships
2) Health systems strengthening: evaluating /developing and applying alternative theoretical and methodological approaches (such as community driven approaches and audits) to monitor and imporve health systems and outcomes; addressing HRH crisis in health systems of low and middle income countries
3) Gender and social determinants of health: advancing the gender intersectionality perspective to address health inequalities; examining structural determinants of HIV and AIDS and neglected tropical diseases
Teaching
I lecture on four courses across MSc programmes: Health policy analysis, Globalisation and public health, Global politics of public health and Health systems reform and Public Private Partnerships.
I have also convened and lectured on Gender, health and development course and lectured HIV and AIDS and development; Qualitative research methods in other universities.
